Use your AC the right way and save money

The one thing that we cannot imagine our lives without during the summer is an air conditioner.

In fact, if our AC stops working even for a day, it drives us crazy.

And, as the temperature outside goes high, so does the duration for which we use our AC. Then, what awaits us is high energy bills.

Though we cannot completely stop using our air conditioner to save money, there are ways that we can follow to reduce our energy expenditure. Surely, you must be keen on learning about these ways, so let us discover them without a wait.

1. Seal your doors and windows

Most people do not even realize that they are losing their cold air conditioning through their unsealed doors and windows. You can easily look for this by going outside and running your hand across your windows and doors.

If you feel the cold air is leaking out, then you need to caulk around leaky windows and even add insulation around your doors.

Yet another good way to find out how nicely the cold air is being held in your home will be to opt for a home energy audit.

An expert home energy auditor or rater will look for leaks in your home and suggest you the top ways to make your house more energy-efficient.

2. Make sure your thermostat is placed properly

If you have your thermostat placed near a window or some exterior wall, then it might register an improper reading and kick on your AC more frequently.

You will need to hire an air condition contractor San Diego to place your thermostat at the right place. This may cost you some money, but eventually, you will save more each year.

You might even consider replacing your present thermostat with a smart one that will make it easier for you to regulate your home temperature.

3. Change the air conditioning temperature when not in need

If you are going out for a vacation, make sure to turn off the air conditioner. And, if nobody will be at home at least for a few hours then turn the temperature up at least a few degrees.

Whenever possible, try to maintain as less a difference between the indoor and outdoor temperature as is possible. This will help you save quite a good amount on your air conditioning.

Also, you may consider using a programmable thermostat that can be controlled from your phone.

Using it, you will be able to control the setting when you are away, and you can make sure your home is comfortable and ready even before you arrive.

4. Use a fan

Ceiling fans circulate fresh air, and this takes some burden off your air conditioning unit.

So, if you do not have a ceiling fan already, it will be wise to consider installing one this season.

You may feel ceiling fans are low-tech, but they can wonderfully help keep you cool.

Not only will it reduce your air conditioning requirements, but save you a significant amount on your electricity expenses.

If need be, you may also strategically install portable fans in particular rooms or around the house.

And yes, do not forget to turn off the fans when you are not in the room because they have been designed to cool people and not a room.

5. Replace HVAC filters

Air filters play a crucial role in helping your air conditioning unit run smoothly. They help make sure that dust and any other airborne pathogens do not block the vents and that you enjoy healthy air circulation.

When the air filters get dirty, the AC will have to work harder to circulate fresh and clean air.

Unfortunately, most people ignore the air filters that have such an important role to play.

But, if you want to lower your energy costs, want to enjoy clean circulated air, and do not want your air conditioning unit to get damaged, then make sure you get your air filters replaced regularly.

Ideally, you must replace it at least once in three months.

6. Cook outside if possible

When you cook on an oven or stovetop, it generates a lot of heat, and this adds strain to your air condition unit.

Kitchen appliances like refrigerators and other electronics as it increases the temperature. Cooking then only makes the situation worse.

So, if possible, try and cook your meals outside during the summer months. Even if not every day, preparing a few meals outside per week will help make a huge difference.

7. Use shades, curtains, and blinds

Your air conditioning unit has to work harder in rooms that get direct sunlight and gets heated up easily. To block out the heat, you can consider installing blinds, curtains, or shades.

You have so many varieties, colors, styles, and patterns to choose from. Installing them will not only help control the heat that enters your home, but it will also add to your home’s aesthetics.

8. Plant some trees around

True that this will not give you instant results and will not have an impact on your next month’s bills.

But, eventually, it will prove to be a wise decision.

If you successfully can control the amount of sunlight that enters your home through the windows, then you will also be able to control the need to use your air conditioning unit as well.

So, without a wait, plants trees and shrubs around your home that will help lower your utility bills in the long run.
